Being fit means different things to different people.  For some it means being able to do continuous physical activity in an aerobic way which is sustainable. For others it can mean the ability to call upon reserves of muscular strength, muscular endurance, lung power and flexibility.

At the other extreme – and most relevant to us moms – there is a multimillion dollar industry focused on telling women that being fit means being thin and that dieting is part of good nutrition.

A more simple all encompassing definition is that: being fit means you have more energy to do daily tasks, can be more active, and do not tire as easily during the day when running after the kids.  It is all about being happy and healthy so you can be a much better mom than you otherwise would be.

Being fit means, of course, much more than being muscular or athletic.  All three levels of the self – MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT – need to be worked and reshaped. Its more than proper exercise – it involves a holistic approach to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise is important as part of a healthy lifestyle. It helps by causing physical changes inside your body that help it react to and handle stress.  It is, in part, habit or routine and keeping the routine going will help ensure that you will participate in some type of exercise for life. It should be a routine part of your day, just like brushing your teeth, eating, and sleeping.

Exercise does not have to be boring nor difficult.  It can be one of the best things you can do for yourself and it will help you both mentally and physically. You do not have to spend hours in a gym to be physically active.  You can try dance, basketball, weights, walking, running or yoga.

This means you can choose something that fits in with your kids and their routine. You could even do an exercise program with your child or that somehow involves him or her.

Your body burn fat for hours after you are done and your heart will beat faster, making it stronger.

Science has shown the health-related benefits of being physically fit such as: helping to ward off heart disease; prevent high blood pressure; strengthen your bones; ward off heart disease and other medical problems; relieve stress; maintain or achieve an appropriate weight for height and body build; and, reduce stress.

When you are physically fit, you feel and look better, and you stay healthier.
